I have worked at a private Christian school in the Bahamas for 14 years as a third grade teacher. Understanding the value of money has always been a component of the curriculum requirement for the national exams at this grade level. However, curriculum textbooks and mainstream resources all display American money, which would often create some confusion for students when they encountered Bahamian money on the Grade Level Assessment Test (GLAT). Once I began to use the charts and coins made by Anna Strachan showcasing the Bahamian coins and bills in my teaching, the students were able to immediately connect with the money.

Further, the students were also given homework and class practice using the math books. The answer key for each grade level text is located at the back of each book so that teachers, parents, and students can have immediate feedback and check answers independently. The coins and bills were also used to complete authentic assessments within the classroom and school community, as the students had to operate a classroom store, make a budget, purchase items, and give the correct change. Students were allowed to demonstrate their understanding and familiarity with the coins and bills by using their skills to purchase lunch and snacks from the cafeteria daily and checking to ensure the total for each item was accounted for.

Overall, the math manipulatives and charts enhanced my lessons on the concept of understanding the value of money and supported the push to assist students with becoming familiar with Bahamian coins and bills.
